"'I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT WHENEVER I THINK THAT MY FRIENDS OR FAMILY OR ANYONE ELSE MIGHT THINK MY OUTFITS ARE UNUSUAL OR WEIRD THAT I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT YOU TELLING PEOPLE TO JUST WEAR WHAT THEY LIKE AND THAT'S WHAT I DO. THANK YOU FOR THAT. ALSO - YOUR BLOG KICKS MAJOR ASS.'
It's true you know, you can't please everyone and you can't expect everyone to always like your style, because they're not. Even the top fashion icons of the world get criticized on certain outfit choices but none of that matters. All that matters is how you feel in your clothes..." -dirtylittlestylewhoree
I think about that a lot. Especially when I remember how people teased me for what I wore all the way through freshman year of highschool. I decided then - in order to fit in - that I wanted to dress "normally" (whatever that meant). So I started buying clothes from American Eagle and Ambercrombie (ohhh, yes I did). I realized that the clothes I wore didn't make people like me more - they just found other things to make fun of me for. No amount of hiding behind logo shirts made me the same as them. NOW, I embrace every aspect of my differentness. I wear what I want - even when people look at me and say "Only you could pull that off" (thanks deeners!) and now it makes me smile :-) Because wearing dresses over jeans is awesome - even if Karl and I are the only ones who think so.
Recently, I have been working with a non-profit called Teens Turning Green on an event called Project Green Challenge. PGC is a 30-day lifestyle challenge to transition high school and college age kids to a greener lifestyle. Being an eco-fashion enthusiast, I procured and styled PGC host Erin Schrode in 30 head-to-toe GREEN outfits. I challenged myself to find things that were organic, sustainable, fair-trade, up-cycled, or repurposed in some way. After the shoot a few weeks ago - Erin was asked to speak at a world summit called One Young World.
If you watch 2 min. 26 sec in you will see Erin wearing a dress that I procured for her. But seriously, do yourself a favor and watch the whole video...
I'm pretty proud. And I just wanted to share that with all of you :-)
Stay tuned for more pictures from the Project Green Challenge lookbook styled by yours truly!
Fashion's Night Out is one week from today (September 8th for those of us who started their weekend early).
Whenever I'm not sure what to wear to one of these things - I always look to the past. How was I so sure flared jeans were coming back? OH, BECAUSE THEY HAPPENED 20 YEARS AGO! It's that simple kittens. Just research what was happening 20 years ago and you too, can be a fashion maven.
I GUARANTEE if you wear anything like the frocks in this video, ladies will be eyeballing you like Don Draper in no time.
Now, I've gotta go hem this dress before I wear it today.. Seriously...
"The Viral Factory produced this short film celebrating 100 years of fashion in East London in 100 seconds to announce the grand opening of retail shopping mecca Westfield Stratford City. In the spot, a guy and a gal start dancing like it's 1911, and by the time they reach 2011, they've tiptoed their way through 100 years' worth of costume changes."
I can speak for both Emily and I to say that I would wear everything in this video. I'm so inspired!
Emily Barton is not our name. Don't call us that, or do, we're pretty laid back. We only want to add lovely pictures & ideas to your life and to ours subsequently.
We talk about fashion and being gluten-free/vegan. We think food & fashion should & can exist together in a perfect world. Like peanut butter & jelly. Hall & Oates. Chicken and the chicken container.
Love you, mean it.
