Banksy

For those of you in San Francisco:

The world-famous graffiti artist Banksy is in town this week (who knows for how long). So far he's hit China town, the Mission and the Haight (no specifics tho :(. These posts will probably be up for a VERY limited time. So just like Pokemon - you gotta catch em while you can.

I first learned of this artist in my formative years during my under-grad. His clever, satirical pieces are always political and always heartfelt. Here are some pics of his recent posts while in San Francisco.

little darlin'

I found a little plot of land
in the garden of Eden
it was dirt and dirt is all the same

I tilled it with my two hands
and I called it my very own
There was no one to dispute my claim

Well, you'd be shocked at the state of things
The whole place had just cleared right out
It was hotter than hell, so I lay me by a spring
For a spell as naked as a trout

The wandering eye that I have caught
Is as hot as a wandering sun
But I will want for nothing more, in the garden
To start again
In the hardening of every new heart but one

Meet me in the garden of Eden,
Bring a friend, we are going to have a time
We have are going to have a garden party,
It's on me, no sir-e, it's my dime

We broke out hearts in the war between
St. George and the dragon
But both in equal parts are welcome to come along
To come along, I'm inviting everyone

Farewell, to loves that i have known
Even muddiest as waters run
Tell me what is meant by sitting alone in a garden,
Seceded from the Union in the year of '81?

The unending amends you made
Are enough for one life, be done
I believe in innocence, little darling, start again
I believe in everyone

I believe, regardless, I believe in everyone

Arugula Avocado Pasta

Just plain yum.

1/2 lb. linguine (feel free to use gluten-free alternative like this)
3 c broccoli chopped
olive oil
1/4 tsp lime zest
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1/4 c white wine (some for you, some for meee)
1 c vegetable broth
2 tbsp lime juice
2-4 c arugula leaves (or spinach if you're into the vegetable)
2 avocados cut into 1/2 - 1" chunks
8 oz. of cherry tomatoes (cut in half)
fresh pepper to taste
sea salt to taste

Prep your ingredients before hand coz this recipe goes quick once the pasta is done!

Bring large pot of water to boil. Once boiling cook pasta per directions on the package. Usually about 10 minutes.

Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil, lime zest and red pepper stirring often for about 2 minutes. Add wine and turn up heat just a little to reduce wine for about 2 minutes. Add vegetable broth, lime juice, salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat to a simmer, add arugula & broccoli and cover.

Once arugula is wilted turn off heat. Gently toss in cooked pasta, cherry tomatoes, and avocado. Cover with lid for about 3 minutes. Crack fresh pepper over dish and serve.

Fesenjan Tofu with Saffron Rice

Fesenjan is a Persian dish generally made with Chicken instead of Tofu. But since I'm vegan and this is my blog (and Barton's) we shall make it with tofuuuuuuuuu!

Fesenjan Tofu

1/2 onion chopped
3/4 c pomegranate concentrate (I used unsweetened pomegranate juice (make sure it's 100% juice))
1/4 water optional
1/2 c finely chopped walnuts
1 lb. (16 oz.) firm tofu
olive oil
sea salt to taste
unrefined sugar to taste

Heat olive oil & onions in skillet over medium heat. Add walnuts. Cook until onions are soft and slightly transparent. There should be a distinct walnut-y smell. Add pomegranate juice, sugar and water (if too pomegrantey). Simmer sauce over low heat for about 10 minutes.

In a separate skillet sauté olive oil and tofu. Break tofu into chunks (scramble-style). Let cook stirring frequently until the water has cooked from the tofu and it starts to brown. Stir tofu into pomegranate.

Serve over jasmine or saffron rice (see below).

Saffron Rice

2 c white basmati rice
3 1/2 c vegetable stock
1/4 - 1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp saffron threads
1/4 - 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
1 tbsp lemon juice

Pour stock into medium sized pot (with lid). Place on stove over high heat. While it comes to a boil add turmeric, saffron, red pepper and lemon. Stir well. Once boiling add rice & salt & reduce heat to low. Cook until liquid has been absorbed by the rice (20-30 minutes). Keep covered in pot until served.

Yay! Something different for dinner! Lemme know what you think!

Kiss Me

I was 12 years old when I had my first kiss. It happened the first school year I was allowed to watch my younger sister after school, until my mom got home from work. This of course meant that everyday my middle-school boyfriend would sneak over and hang out.

He had long blonde hair that was vaguely reminiscent of Kurt Cobain's. He smoked cigarettes he stole from his brother and played bass in a band called Dark Illusion. I was pretty much putty in his 12 year old hands. We would sit in my room and listen to Nirvana & Smashing Pumpkins and talk about how depressing life was. Really? What did I have to be depressed about? The WB canceling the best version of Batman animators would ever dream of? - oh yeah, life was really hard.

We would sit and stare at each other for a really, really long time. I think it was a sort of dare to see who would kiss the other first. But it did finally happen. During one of our human magic-eye sessions, sitting cross-legged on my carpet listening to the alt-radio hit "Everything Zen." We didn't know what we were doing so we just sort of opened our mouthes and swirled our tongues around. There was a lot of drooling and sucking noises. We literally sucked face.

Years later and it's still like that - nooo, just kidding. But come to think of it, he was the only person I've ever stared at like that. I mean, how long can you actually stare into someone's eyes (while being 100% serious) before you get uncomfortable and look away? Count it off to yourself next time you find yourself staring down the barrel of another person. 10 seconds? 15?

The dreaded FIRST KISS was the inspiration for a recent literary compilation. This one-off zine entitled First Kiss is tender, hilarious and totally kissable. A reading of the zine is scheduled next month for those of you lucky enough to be in New York. Zeitgeist authors such as Tavi (fashion novice StyleRookie), Lesley Arfin (my hero), Gavin McInnes (creator of Vice) and Zach Baron (associate editor of the Village Voice) will be of the few telling their tales of adolescence. The project is headed by Marisa Meltzer who pens another zine entitled "Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music."

These virgin smooching testaments will be told Wednesday, May 26th at the 92nd St. Y Tribeca at 7pm. Tickets are $12. Find out more about it here.

So I told you mine: you tell me yours. Tell CAG about your first kiss.

I would like to look like this as I travel this summer:

LOOKBOOK.nu:

I've been purging and selling and cutting and pasting my wardrobe both in an effort to afford clothing (not buying anything unless its money that has come from selling clothing) but also just to start anew.

I would also like this song to be playing in the background when I'm walking around:

"Do People Not Wear Deodorant?"

Next Sunday Zac Posen's line for Target opens at a store near you. This past weekend was Posen's NY debut of the line. The party included a VIP room with the likes of Ginnifer Goodwin, Mena Suvari and (personal favorite) Claire Danes. This "party" was so off-the-hook the line spread from the corner of Eighth Ave. to the middle of 34th St. Posen himself had to be quarantined to a stairwell with security on hand.

Come see what all the fuss is about next Sunday when Zac Posen's line for Target opens.

Or if you hate throngs of people who Michelle Trachtenberg knows "do not wear deodorant" then you should prolly just peep it from here. Or here.

Youtube sensation Pomplamoose has a few simple rules. 1.) If you hear it than that is the take of the video you are seeing. 2.) And that music doesn't have to be glitzy to be good. You can even make it in your apartment in about a week:

Pomplamoose can be found at a youtube near you. Bein' super cute and interviewin' on NPR.

One Day Without Shoes

Two days ago, the shoe company TOMS encouraged 250,000 people to go barefoot for the day. This was in efforts to show people what daily life is like for millions of children around the world who live without shoes.

Would you go a day without shoes?

what to do with your tax return...

Here is what I would do with mine if I wasn't planning for this...

First off, I would stop by Agyness Deyn & I's favorite new ultra-fem UK designer, and snag this dress.

I would also purchase that rockin' bod to go with it.

This dress will minus you £245 from your piggy bank. Buy it here.

If you don't want to drop some bucks on that dress - spend it on this one:

This lovely frock from Bona Drag is called the Expedition Dress. It makes me want to get a basket for the front of my bike so I can put a picnic in it to share with my lovely blogmate. It'll take $276 out of the coffers.

I'm actually super surprised I don't own these babies yet. I've been coveting them for days. They can be bought on the Swedish Hasbeens site with most major credit cards for a fee of $217 (includes shipping). They also come in a variety of springy colors :)

And if you're going to wear those. You're going to need this.

Cause polished toenails are really cute and fun to do while sipping margaritas on the rocks (my new favorite drink). This polish by Butter London can be found here for $16.

My spring is going to be seriously lacking without a straw hat. No. Seriously. They are lovely. And if you've seen Coco Avant Chanel - you know straw hats aren't just for corn-pones. Check out this lovely hat from Jolie Chapeau Hat's on etsy for $35.

Or this vintage 60's boater from Ivogel Art Studio 2's etsy site also for $35.

Last but not least: I really enjoy me some paper-bag waist. These linen shorts will help you keep your cool while flirting with bartenders and tendresses sipping your... you know me too well... margarita on the rocks ;)

Buy them here for $48. Or buy a lovely pair I saw at H&M. They're high-waisted and cornflower blue (couldn't find a pic).
