Dear Emily,

(This post was supposed to have a celebratory picture of you from last night!! Whoops. Maybe I'll get one this evening...)

Oh, what a year you have had.

Nothing makes me more proud or more excited to be alive than you. You make me smile and you have the sweetest shoulder to lean on. Thank you for being an amazing partner in crime.

Our future is bright and I cant wait for it to unfold.

Happy Birthday.

I love you, and I truly mean it.

barton

this is actually...

...a really sad song:

i really loved this band when i was a kid. i'm just a little nostalgic today cause yesterday was my birthday. silly birthdays. i feel like a jerk for it but i'm just a bit melancholy about it.

anyway here are some images for today that go with the dawn of a new year, new things and new experiences.  here's to carving a new path for ourselves and drawing the best aspects of us out into the open.

to being new.

These Are a Few of My Favourite Things:

There isn't much that Kate & Laura Mulleavy do that I don't like.  Seriously, if they started a candy company I'd prolly get super fat.  So when I picked up the latest issue of Lula (also the best thing since daiya) and saw that 3/4ths of it was either about or by Rodarte, I pretty much peed in anticipation.  They did not disappoint either.  One of my favorite parts so far (I just got it yesterday) is the questionnaire that Kate Mulleavy made up for her friend Autumn to test on her new boyfriend.  "In the end, it doesn't really tell you much about a person, which I guess is a good thing.  [But] it's still fun to read" says Kate.

Here are the questions and my answers for them - Please fill them out yourself and send them back to us <3  We'd love to hear from you!

What on earth are you wearing?

If you don't know about Michi - you prolly should.  I just learned about her myself so don't feel bad.  This made-up Melbourne gal touts stories about "Fashion, fun things to do, beautiful pictures, book reviews, misguided advice, fashion, food, recipes and oh, did I mention fashion?" Sound like someone else you know? Well. This made-up diva (the brain child of Chloe Quigley and Daniel Pollock) has recently "written" a book based on her experience telling b*tches what to wear for the past 8 years.  Barton, does that mean we have to keep writing for 6 MORE years in order to write a book?!?

Anyway, I'm going to check this book out with some of my donut money.  That's right, donut money.  Coz I need to know terms like "acid wash reflux disease" and "galloon."  I mean, who doesn't?

Let Michi drop some knowledge on you here.

New Year New Hair

Usually I rely on a lovely new frock to complete my New Year's Eve look. But new clothes are so last year... Literally though cause I'm broke. Soooo I am placing all bets on a new hair do to finish the ensemble this year. I was inspired by the modern liberty curls look from the UO Holiday '10 catalog:

Then I found a How-To by this lil' beauty:

Seems easy enough right? I'll let you know how the trial run goes...

I'm going to finish it off with some layered slips (via the 90's), some faux or borrowed fur, ripped tights and boots.  Inspired by:

Read my Lim

Probably the most exciting thing to come out of this "PRE" fall nonsense is a peek at Phillip Lim's new collection.  I mean, c'mon, is there going to be a post-fall too?  Anyway:

I was interested in creating interesting profiles,” said Phillip Lim, referring to the subtle proportion play that framed his pre-fall collection. Jackets with extra cuffs spliced midsleeve and silk dresses with gentle folds in the front made for different silhouettes, depending on the angle. It was a layered look that struck a fine balance between structure and softness. A sturdy safari coat was done with cable-knit sleeves, and pants were draped at the waist for a modern, tomboy twist, which was nowhere more evident than on a classic leather jacket with a sprinkle of crystal embroidery on its sleeves." (quoth WWD)

Here are a few of my favorites:

The gray dress (which also comes in camel) is my absolute fav of the collection.  I really want the straps to be movable though - wouldn't that be awesome??  I just really like versatility in garments.  Workable angles, movable parts, multi-functionality.  It's the future of fashion says I.  And you can take that one to the bank!

Monday is the New Sunday

Raise your hands if you like delicious homemade breakfasts but are kinda lazy and don't wanna do like 18 hours of prep the night before...  Yeah me too.

I recently found this super easy recipe for vegan cinnamon buns.  They aren't as amazing as Cinnaholic - but we all don't live in Berkeley.  Annnd they are closed on Mondays...

Quick and Dirty Vegan Cinnamon Buns

• 1 c white all-purpose flour
• 1 c whole wheat flour
• 4 Tbsp vegan margarine
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 Tbsp baking powder
• 3/4 c vanilla almond milk
• 3/4 c brown sugar
• 1 Tbsp cinnamon
• 2 tsp melted margarine

Icing:
powdered sugar
vanilla almond milk
(Using powdered sugar and a splash of almond milk.  Mix together to desired consistency and amount)

Preheat oven to 450.˚  Combine flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl.  Cut in margarine and massage the marg into the flour mixture using your fingers (it's fun!).  Then add the almond milk.  It's easiest to knead together using your hands.  Roll dough into a ball and place on a floured surface.  Roll into a rectangular shape (mine was sorta oblong).

Brush melted marg and sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon on top.  From the long side of the roll, tightly roll into a tube placing the seam on the bottom.  Then cut the roll into 1" rolls (makes 12 - 15 buns).

Place rolls into a greased baking dish (I used pie tins).  Bake for 12-13 minutes, until poufy and golden.

You can ice these bad boys while they are still hot because you want the icing all melty and gooey-like.

Then enjoy!

Are you there cat? It's me Emily.

Current blog crush: The Catalyst.  Design nut Jenny Ryf and her man-friend write the blog about pretty much anything that inspires them.  Each inspiration is sectioned off by category.  My favorite?  "Famous People + Cats."  As the name cleverly states it's pictures of celebrities and their cats.  I'm actually kicking myself a little for not thinking of it first.  Here are a handful of my favorites:
