Bleed American

After company profits were reported to be down 23 percent last Friday, shares plummeted 17 percent. The New York Post painted a grim picture of American Apparel's current standing, claiming their biggest hindrance was the "immigration crackdown" at the company's LA factory. This lead to the forced firing of 1,500 employees (mostly women).

"As a result of all this, American Apparel has had trouble stocking its shelves in its 281 stores" (Jezebel).

But!? Where am I going to buy a nylon spandex stretch floral lace long-sleeve thong bodysuit now???

Atomic

Meet my new favorite fashion illustrator Kris Atomic.

This lovely lass hales from the Camberwell College of Arts in London. She photographs, paints, loves kitties and is all around pretty interesting. Here are a handful of my favorite things from recent posts. I think it paints a pretty good picture of Kris. But you don't have to take my word for it. Here is her blog for all around daily enjoyment.

PLUS I'm pretty sure this following picture is of me.

Doesn't it look like me?

P.S. all photos from Kris Atomic sept for the picture of the old couple which is from Miloissweet. Another really cute blog I like.

Something I'd Like to do During Break

Today marked the halfway point of my post-graduate degree. With my last final taken I'm taking stock and making lists of all the things I want to do over spring break:

01.) go dancing with Barton <3!

02.) finish sewing up my dad's cookie pants (my not-so-clever name for pj pants)

03.) draft a pattern for my velvet leggings

04.) create & post new jewelry for my etsy site

05.) revamp my closet - !!!

I added that last one onto the list today after reading about Closet Couture. It's a new social networking site that is like the pinnacle of Cher Horowitz's closet. I know we've mentioned this before. But this site is like the Chanel of closet organizing sites. It lets you upload your closet and plan outfits (le duh), create a calendar with bitchin outfits you've worn (umm, hello fashion toast), plan a packing list for a trip, and match pieces from the store with items you already have in your collection. Can't decide what to wear? Hire a personal stylist for only $25. What the what?!? Yeah, your own stylist. That is radder than eating a bowl full of marshmallow cereal (don't worry kids - them's are vegan marshmallows). Vogue magazine says: "Forget Facebook...Closet Couture makes Cher Horowitz's software in Clueless look like the Oregon Trail."

To make the deal even sweeter - Jimmy Choo and Saks Fifth Avenue are pairing up with Closet Couture in a series of in-store events "centered around styling" (WWD). Closet Couture stylists will show tender lil' viewers how to style outfits for different occasions based around Choo's shoes (say that three times fast). Three lucky lil' kittens viewing this display will win a collection of 3 free Jimmy Choo shoes. Pretty radi-cool eh?

This snippet stemmed from a larger article from WWD about fashion social networking sites. The article is really interesting and I highly recommend it. Read more of it here.

intuition + fashion sense = we were right.

“Because these boots are warm and soft, young girls think they are giving their feet a break. In fact, they are literally breaking their feet.” Drysdale continued, “Their feet are slipping around inside. With each step, the force falls towards the inside of the foot and the feet splay. This flattens the arch and makes it drop. The result can be significant problems with the foot, the ankle, and ultimately, the hip.Joanna Douglas

CFDA Nominations for 2010

This past Wednesday while I was deep in the land of homework and the rest of the world was deep in the land of green beer, fashion designers were flocking to Diane von Furstenberg's studio in New York. They were there to hear the much anticipated CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) nominations for the year. The nominees are as follows:

Womenswear Designer of the Year:

Menswear Designer of the Year:
Marcus Wainwright and David Neville for Rag & Bone

Accessory Designer of the Year:
Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough for Proenza Schouler
Marc Jacobs

Other awards announced include a lifetime achievement award to Michael Kors and a special tribute to Alexander McQueen.

L'Oréal of Paris is also sponsoring a Popular Vote Award where you, fellow fashion lover, can vote for your favorite designer (starting in April). And don't worry kitten, we will have a handy dandy little link where you can do that - just as soon as one is available.

Exciting eh?

dirty hair and dirty feet...yes, please.

Lately i've had the travel/camping bug. I have no idea how it happened, but there you go. I have it. Along with that little bugger and my self imposed "no spending money on things this month," I have been
informed of a company who specializes in travel bags/sleeping bags/doggie bags etc. in the neighborhood. And everything is effing cute? oh. i'm doomed!

This sleeping bag will attach to other bags as well as has a zipper on the bottom and arm holes so you don't have to get out of it in the morning to go get the fire going. I swear this solves so many problems. And speaking of getting the fire going... there are a few other attachments that can be made to make sure you can "hang out" with your camping parter. Uh. yeah. :)

Just the other day I was dreaming of this hot purple backpack I had in the second grade and how great it was because it had a drawstring top...

This rolls up to be just about a pound and the size of an "SF Burrito." Prrrfect.

Fanny packs are in. Get over it. Save your shoulders and your backs.

There you have it. The Alite Site is awesome. Go get some bag therapy on.

Wishing for Fall 2011

I try my best to live in the "now" but because of  Louis Vuitton's fall 2011, I want next fall this very moment:

I feel as though I either have a heads up, or I just got my mind read.

Either way is fine with me and I'm jumping on this bandwagon ASAP.
  • Corsets
  • Gloves
  • Fitted tops, full flowy skirts.
  • bows
  • doctor shaped bags
  • simple and sophisticated pumps

"reinvent the season we're designing for"

I know I've really beat this issue over the head. But Donna Karan preaches to the choir here in this interesting article. It addresses the conundrum of "shopping for a cute new bikini in the middle of summer [while] stores are selling parkas and sweaters" (the Cut).

Visual Soliloques

Freelance photographer Linus Shentu took some amazing photographs of the Mission folk and beyond...

Pigeon!!

Kissing in Dolores Park, so cute.

I always find myself pleasantly surprised to stumble upon contemporary, young, creative and innovative artists. These are some amazing photos of really tender and unexpected moments. I love the way the photos make you feel as though you can hear the person talk, or their breath as the picture is taken. I encourage you to take a look at his site

In Other News...

So. Milan fashion week just ended. So? Yeah, I wish someone would've taken me too. But c'est la vie.

Here is what I found interesting about the week. And with one whole day left - whose to say what crazy shenanigans the fashion world might get itself into?

Here's what I've got so far:

White Elephant Sale

I almost forgot! And thank goodness for Daily Candy's weekend forecast to remind me...

The White Elephant Sale! "What is that?" you may be asking... Its only the most glorious rummage sale of the year. Glorious.

As stated on their website:

The White Elephant Sale is the b
iggest, the best and certainly the most enjoyable rummage sale in Northern California.

Better yet, all proceeds from the sale go to s
upport programs and exhibitions at the Oakland Museum of California!!

There are
17 departments in the White Elephant Sale with everything from sporting goods to boutique items, books to furniture, art to electrical items, dishes to shoes, children's clothes and toys to furnishings, or Hawaiian shirts to vintage clothing.

All are spread out in the
96,000-square-foot warehouse, sorted according to departments. You will find treasures of all sorts.

You do not want to miss this!
