September Battle Royale

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE BATTLE:

Harper's Bazaar vs. Vogue

It's no question that the best thing Vogue has going for it is Grace Coddington. But this infamous September Issue is no exception. Touting such highlights as two Coddington spreads (one favoring the lovely, yet spoiled, Betty Draper), an article about the upcoming Fashion's Night Out (Sept. 10th), and ummm... an article on Halle Berry? The similarly priced Harper's Bazaar is far superior.

The Sept. Issue of HB includes my boyfriend Marc Jacobs as interpreted by Calvin Klein, a pictoral homage to 1930s fashion icon Daisy Fellowes, hilarious different ways Rachel Zoe could DIE, a comparison shoot of Jenny Aniston as Barbara Streisand (she's a Sadie) and an adorb's "making of" mockumentary starring Ted Danson and Jason Schwartzman. If you care about Ralph Lauren - there's an article in there about him too. So, yeah. Just spend your $4.99 on HB. You won't be sorry and you won't have to suffer through 800 pages of ads before you get to any articles. OOoooh snap...

I Know You Wanna...

I heart Freja Beha (even with her ridiculous rhyming name). I heart her even more pretending to be Jane Fonda.

Loving the feathers hanging off of the bag. Also loving the Parisian 1960s look. Do I smell a trend?

Catch this in the latest Vogue Nippon.

Catwalk Cats

Could Grace Coddington get any cooler?

Vogue creative director, Grace Coddington (god of my idolatry), is currently working on a movie about... her cats.

I almost peed my pants a little when I read it.

The movie will be roughly based on her book "Catwalk Cats," that she wrote with partner Didier Malige. The book records the couple's relationship with their "family of cats" through a series of photographs and drawings (Coddington's). It also diaries their over 20 year relationship together working in the fashion industry, through the eyes of their cats (HOW have I not read this yet?!?). "It is both a convincing argument about the fundamental similarities between felines and fashionistas, and a wonderful and moving meditation on love and family" (steidville).

The film is set to be made by September Issue's director R.J. Cutler. Who has kindly included 90 minutes of unseen footage on the September Issue DVD release, including footage of Coddington's infamous cats.

This is my suggested reading as Fashion Week approaches. Fashion Week, February 11 - 18, is being held at Lincoln Center this year instead of the usual Bryant Park (Let's see if it will do as well as Project Runway's change in location?). The move has left our lovely Grace Coddington less than enthused saying: "I'm very upset because it's so close to Vogue, I can walk" (the cut).

I hate walking too Grace, I hate walking too.

Amazed Grace

Grace Coddington (mentioned earlier in the month on this here Blog-o-tron)(Also Creative Director of Vogue magazine) "says she is "flabbergasted" by the attention surrounding her at Paris Fashion Week (after the release of the documentary September Issue). Apparently, fans have been rushing her after every fashion show to get pictures with her or talk to her" (The Cut).

Anna Wintour is calling it "Funny and amusing," probably because she isn't receiving the same attention behind her 8 bodyguards and her bitchiness.

Way to go Grace!!

Full of Grace

Last weekend I went to see the much talked about September Issue. As much as I love the bitchiness of Anna, the real star of the film was Grace Coddington (pictured above middle). Grace Coddington is Vogue magazine's creative director and, as quoted from the film, possibly the greatest stylist of all time. She also controls most of the photo shoots for Vogue and, also quoted from the film, the only stylist who still dresses the models.

Word on the street is that she absolutely did not want to be filmed for the documentary but relented due to Anna's requests. "Watching the documentary, you'd barely know it: she charms Cutler's (and thus, in some ways, Wintour's) film crew and soon is using them for her advantage by talking money with Anna on camera so that she can't cancel her budget. This dame knows how to play the game and isn't afraid to fight dirty, but she doesn't do it in the name of flighty Fashion (with a capital F) but she does it for art, which gives her a nobler cause" (Gawker.com).

During the film, Grace was warm and kind. At one point telling the camera man not to listen about what Wintour said about "hitting the gym." "Coddington seems to pump passion and artistic integrity into the pages while not being swept up in the celebrity frenzy that seems synonymous with fashion these days" (Associate Press).

Grace started her career in fashion modeling in the 60's. Her modeling career was cut short by a car accident in which she flew through the window. British Vogue quickly picked her up as a junior fashion editor. Later starting at American Vogue the same day as Anna Wintour. The lovingly volatile pair still work together today creating some of the most interesting fashion spreads the world has ever seen:

"One Word: Plastics."

The term "plastic sandals" conjures up images of sweaty childhood feet stuffed into "jellies."  Namely for me.  When I think plastic sandals, I think gross.

The July issue of Vogue features some anything BUT child-like plastic Givenchy Sandals.

Givenchy head designer, Riccardo Tisci says "I wanted this shoe to be more accessible in terms of price and practicality" (July 2009 Vogue).  These shoes are comfortable (according to Vogue) and range from about $163 - $170.  Plus they come in a variety of bright-ass summer show stopping colors:

But we don't have to stop there.  Here are a handful of summer sandals that are easy on the budget (around $100) and don't hurt animals (all VEGAN).

These sandals sold on Tobi are called the Melissa Mystery Gladiator Sandals and are only $71.

White Studded Sandals my the British Miss Selfridge are £28.

These are from one of my favorite green sites called Nimli.  These silver sandals are made by Neuaura Puma and will set you out $94.

These classic (un-kid-like) jellies are made by Melissa Plastic Dreams and cost $79.

These are my personal fav's, also from Nimli. They are by Olsen Haus for $128.

Give your feet some vegan love this summer.

p.s. If anyone catches the title reference I'll buy them a coke (my sister will probably be the only one).

Furry Things

Anna Wintour, quite possibly one of the most influential voices in fashion, voiced her opinion about fur on 60 Minutes a little over a week ago.

In case you don't know who she is, Anna Wintour is the editor in chief of American Vogue. A documentary called "September Issue" (about the making of the September issue) is due out in, you guessed it, September.

To hear my & Tim Gunn's opinion about fur go here.
