Fashion Zombies
Today I learned two things:
1. I have no original thoughts
2. I don't like the taste of spinach that much
Yesterday my friend & I were talking about how dope it would be if someone had the concept of making a runway show with ladies who look like zombies. I mean they don't eat food. And brains can't be THAT many calories. It'd be poking fun at the model lifestyle & skinny fashion in general. When Christian Siriano told his models on Project Runway to "not to eat anything" so they stayed thin for his show I almost gagged myself with a spoon (I was eating ice cream). Screw the skinny culture right? Up with curves right? So how hilarious would it be to have zombie models walk down the runway? Genius I thought.
Well, I was beaten to the punch. By a Japanese artist named Fumie Sasabuchi. Dude totally takes pages from fashion mags and draws over them with pen & ink to make these fabulous ladies look deceased. Zombified. I'm totes jel jel. Here are smattering of my favorite photos:
I dunno. Maybe I'll still do it. Screw you Fumie - you are too fabulous for words!
Love you, mean it

Ouch! Why Must Fashion Hurt So Good!!?
I've been thinking lately about shoes. Okay- I always think about shoes...and then I think of clothing and then I think about underwear and tights and then I think about shoes.
Ms. Emily posted an awesome feature on nudes and included on of my favorite companies and the next pair of shoes that I am going to purchase. Great minds.
My big question- if one is going to spend time and effort designing a shoe and the other one is going to spend serious money on the shoe, how come they have to be so gosh darn uncomfortable?? Beauty is pain, but if you have tears running down your face while you are trying to get across a busy intersection, I have a feeling that you aren't thinking about how beautiful you are, but how crappy you feel and how much you would rather cut off your feet than walk one more block in those shoes.
With that... Some of my favorite companies that are getting on the fashion band wagon and still staying at the comfort in:

*Le Sigh* My hearts desire. Indigo by Clarks, Paddington
Its hit or miss with this company... but their shoes stay comfortable forever.
And last but certainly not least- CAMPER!
I have some boots that are going on their second winter. Worth every cent.

She's Like, Smart
Okay okay. So I know this isn't about fashion or food necessarily. But I'm a woman and so is Barton. And this well, it pertains to women.
I just discovered the blog "One D at a Time." Being hilariously fascinated by the name I had to look. I found the first entry both poignant and relevant for today. A friend of mine is in a tiff with her significant other and this article is about the BAD decisions we all make when we're in a fight. One is extreme, the other well, involves pee.
I've been there (not with the water sports) but I've made bad decisions. Said things I didn't mean just to hurt someone. Was reactive & explosive. Accusatory & overdramatic.
Take 5 minutes and read it.

The ballots are in...
Barton & I agree. Nude colors are hotter than ever! We've already started donning ours. What's better for starting to think about summer bathing suits than showing a little skin? Or skin-color rather. Here are some personal picks of mine to start the flesh rebellion:
This is the cotton spandex jersey dress from American Apparel. King of making-you-think-of-sex clothing.
This is the cotton spandex jersey dress from American Apparel. King of making-you-think-of-sex clothing.
Or this Cotton Spandex Jersey Contrast-V Bodysuit also by AA.
Check out these lovely stockings from Urban Outfitters. Pair with a tight tulip skirt. Preferably one that zips up the back.
These Clarks are also just fleshtastic (with a hint of nurse). They remind me of band-aids. But in that good way.
Or this super cute Sabrina bag from the Urban website (umm, website equals way cuter than store right now)(at least the one in Berkeley).
So show your true colors ladies. Don't do a whole outfit in nude or else you'll look like a sexy version of the emporer's clothing. BUT splashes of nekked are mos def necessary this spring.

Fashion Victims: A Video By Tim Gunn
Another reason why I love Tim Gunn sooooooo much. He made this video for PETA after using fur videos to show students at Parson's where fur comes from. When he went to work for Liz Claiborne he showed the CEO's fur videos to show THEM where fur comes from.
Now I'm showing you.

FYI: Barton & I are not necessary completely in-line with the views/practices of PETA.
Grammy for your Mammy
So. I know the Grammy's were soooo last week. BUT the Oscars are this weekend and I'm sure we're all gonna be hearing about the next "swan dress" on Monday so it seems apropos. ALSO I've been hearing more & MORE smack on MIA's dress that she wore to the Grammys.
Dude, she rules. She was preggers and still totally hot (though she could pretty much wear a potato sack and look fab). She went into labor mere HOURS after she wore that dress. I like Henry Holland's dress. You haters can suck it.

I'm in Love
I'm in love. For serious. It's with So Delicious Coconut Yogurt.
It's like the best thing to happen since leggings came back in style. It's soy free (for those of you looking to cut down on your estrogen), dairy free (vegan) AND it's gluten free for those of you looking to well, avoid gluten.
It tastes like the creamiest food orgasm your mouth ever had. I shit you not, you'll be going back for thirds in no time and praying that coconut really is the good kind of fat. I enjoy dipping strawberries in it and pretending I'm in an Herbal Essences commercial (also, that is Tony Hale in the commercial - awes). My favorite flavors so far are plain, vanilla, chocolate (Yes) and piña colada.
You can pick some up at most Whole Foods that I know of.

Diet Coke Break
It's basically like taking everything that is bad for you and cramming it into a tin tube, shoving it closed and then sprinkling rat feces over it. If you drink soda - stop. It's probably full of aspertame and babies and kitten brains or whatever it is you kids drink these days.
But you don't have to take my word for it. Check out these fools. They made a whole website full of different articles about why soda is bad for you. Or as my Michiganian brethren call it: Pop.

I Wanna Party With These Chics
So I wouldn't say I'm a Betsey Johnson fan. But I'm not exactly Not a fan either. She makes some of the BEST party dresses around. I wore a cute, smart-fitting turquoise, tie-up little number to New Years this year made by good ol' BJ. I looked hot - if I do say so myself. But she is a little over-the-top for everyday wear.
Look at these ladies!? I totally want to hang out with them and drink Moet while talking shit on the girl wearing last season's Jimmy Choo's, excuse myself to the powder-room for more nose candy, then come back and dance for another 3 hours until the after-after party! Who wouldn't want to live like they were in Party Girl. Library and all.

Black, White and Metallic All Over
Kind of a quickie here cause I've spent MOST of my lunch looking at collections from this weekend. Things I've gleaned so far? Leopard print is back (again - for like the 3rd season in a row). Motorcycle jackets, shorts, leggings, skirts - Go out and buy one like yesterday. Metallics - throw mixed splashes in liberally. Colors I've seen throughout (thus far) black, warm whites, red, & deep royal purple/blues. Nothing surprising yet, I know. I'm kind of stoked on looking like a motorcycle mama tho (aka a gay man from the 70's).

FASHION WEEK
New York Fashion Week Begins Today! I know you guys MUST be starving - Barton & I haven't talked about food all week. I promise we will fill your bellies soon - pinky swear!
But today is the start of a fashion week. Albeit a sad fashion week. A lot of designers are dropping out or lowering their profile. I'm wondering what to expect? I'm hoping a lot more designers will start making some discount lines (i.e. Marc by Marc Jacobs or See by Chloë). Give the common people beauty! Give us bread but give us roses! (I will give a WHOLE shiny dollar to the person who names that reference).
My favorite from today is Monique Lhuillier. "Monique Lhuillier and her husband, Tom Bugbee, founded Monique Lhuillier & Company in 1996 to rave reviews, quickly establishing the label as a leading bridal couturier. In 1999, the company launched its designer eveningwear collection, which was also met with accolades. Both the bridal and eveningwear collections are handmade of imported fabrics, hand-beaded laces, exquisite embroideries and the finest silk, satins and chiffons. The result is feminine, sexy and timeless (New York Magazine)." (I know, I know. I'm lazy - I didn't write anything myself today). People seen wearing Lhuillier include Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Sharon Stone.
The pictures above are from her Fall 09 show that happened THIS MORNING. How's that for quick?! Thanks New York Magazine! Thanks for giving me things at the speed of light in this fine age of technology instead of waiting for a month until the new Harper's Bizarre comes out!

"Live Fast Dress Pretty"
I will never be on LastNightsParty.
I hardly ever go out. Maybe it's a function of getting older but I just don't go out as much as I used to. Also. When I do go out, I don't get sloppy (I take that back - MOST of the time I don't get sloppy). I actually don't even remember the last time I horked from imbibing a little too heavily (I know by saying this I am inevitably damning myself to spew at the next available occasion).
Sometimes I feel like I might be missing something. Like there is this really good time out there that I'm not having. But then, I look out the window and it's raining. And I'm in bed (under the covers with my clothes on) reading a book and I think "Eff that noise! My life rules!"
But that feeling creeps up every time I look at LastNightsParty. Merlin Bronques finds the loveliness in our drunken 3am moments (and he writes a pretty damn good blog). He finds all the beauty of sitting in the middle of traffic in your underwear, falling off of bar stools because you're laughing so hard or crushing on that scruffy DJ with the flannel. Simply put, I love drunk sluts. I am one. A reformed one, but a drunk slut nonetheless. It's the grandeur of being young and full of cheap beer. AND there's a photographer. Check out LastNightsParty the next time you feel compelled to stare at your laptop instead of going out yourself. Your couch is awesome - don't forget that.

Tiffany Bozic
I came across Tiffany Bozic today in my interweb wanderings. She's a San Francisco artist. She makes me want to wear feathers & faux fur around while wearing sunglasses indoors. Maybe even take a trip to Paxton Gate for some two-headed cat beasts to add to my taxidermy collection. If you live in or around the city I think you should stalk her and tell her how awesome she is for me. Cause I'm gonna take a nap... AND if you're feeling generous you can buy me one of her prints. Send it care of the second oak tree on the left.

I hope you feel inspired by this Sam Haskins photo.

Maison Martin Margiela.. I'm sort of in love.
Getting stoked for New York Fashion Week (the 13th!!!). I was checking out one of the better sites for just looking at collections. And I stumbled across Maison Martin Margiela. Inspired, deconstruction with edgy hems, lines and models. The models each have entire body suits (sometimes just covering the head) making the show more about the clothes & less about the models. Just put the clothes on a mannequin then, you say? This makes it so much better because you can see how the garment moves and how it would look on an actual person (not that I could ever dream of affording couture).
As it turns out Martin Margiela was born in 1957 in Belgium. He studied at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts and went on to work for Jean Paul Gaultier from 1985 - 1987. He created his own collection in 1988 and became the chief designer for Hermés women's line in 1997. Despite his low-profile he continues to amaze the fashion world by repurposing "old wigs, canvases and silk scarves into couture garments" (wikipedia). His signature is deconstruction of proportions and playing with seams, hems and linings in unconventional places. (wikipedia)
Enjoy the pictures of his recent Paris Haute Couture show this past January 26th-28th 2009.

Muffins Upon Muffins
I was sitting at my new favorite cafe- cafe 504 in East Oakland, browsing through their collection of cookbooks when I came across a recipe for Gluten Free Berry Muffins.
First of all- Finding a GF baked good recipe is an accomplishment in itself. On top of finding it, it actually seemed like it contained real food (unlike some recipes that are just trying to make a GF thing look like a typical baked good)
Here is the dig for this post- the recipe has been altered, but i'm still trying to figure out how to credit (or not) the original creator. SO I will show you the beginning of the fabulous muffins and post the end result with the recipe.
By no means are these vegan, but they are cow milk free and gluten free.

Bianca
My girl boner pick of the week is Bianca Jagger.
Famed fashion icon of the 70's & Studio 54 fequenter. Umm, she rode a frigging white horse into Studio 54 for her 32nd birthday!?! How hot is that? She met up with Mick after a "Rolling Stones concert in September 1970 in France" (wikipedia). They were married one year later in Saint Tropez. Her wedding suit launched decades of copy cats parading down the aisle. The marriage lasted for seven years until she accused Mick of sleeping with model Jerry Hall (and he prolly did - scumbag).
After their divorce she visited Nicaragua and became heavily involved in human rights (wait, she's hot AND she cares about things?). Since then she has collaborated with such groups as: Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Coalition for International Justice, Indigenous Development International and People of the American Way (wikipedia).
Look at these pictures though! Holy crap lips, smouldering eyes, flouncing locks. Mos def worthy of worshiping. As Garth would say: "Shwing!"
